Vor 135 Jahren eröffnete der amerikanische Industrielle Andrew Carnegie in einer Vorstadt Pittsburghs die erste von ihm finanzierte öffentliche Bibliothek, gefolgt von über 2800 weiteren Bauten weltweit. Schneider beleuchtet in seinem Essay die Bedeutung dieser Bibliotheken für die demokratische Gesellschaft und hinterfragt ihre sozialen und politischen Implikationen im Spannungsfeld von anspruchsvoller Architektur und öffentlicher Zugänglichkeit. Ein Gespräch über die Bibliotheksgeschichte mit Blick auf die gegenwärtige Rolle von Bibliotheken in der Öffentlichkeit.

We are honored to welcome the study group at Leipzig University for an exclusive student round table.

Three of the participants retired in 2021, while the other three were active until just few weeks ago in January 2025. They are from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, Indiana, and North Carolina.

A German-American Icon Turns Against Universalism: Carl Schurz and the Waning of Minority Rights in 1870s America.

The Rhinelander and 1848 revolutionary Carl Schurz (1829-1906), who became known as an anti-slavery activist and republican politician in the USA during the Civil War era, is still widely regarded today as an integral figure of German-American friendship. Numerous accolades emphasize that Schurz, throughout his life, stood up for the principles of democracy and the equality of all people.

On June 17, 5pm, Leipzig historian and expert on 19th-century U.S. history, Dr. Julius Wilm, presents a more nuanced view of Schurz's later positions, drawing on his new book »Ein deutscher Revolutionär im Amt: Carl Schurz und der Niedergang der Minderheitenrechte in den USA der 1870er-Jahre«.

As U.S. senator, Schurz fought against the protections of African-American civil rights in the southern states, which he had previously favored. As U.S. secretary of the interior, he also introduced a policy of forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples and even ordered the starving of rebellious Indigenous people. The talk frames the presentation of Schurz's 1870s turn against equal minority rights with contemporary critiques.

This live-streamed lecture is a cooperation between American Studies Leipzig, the German-American Institute Saxony and the Carl-Schurz-Haus in Freiburg.

Prof. Stephen J. Farnsworth will visit Leipzig on May 17 for a luncheon talk about the role of media and political humor in US presidential elections.

Stephen Farnsworth is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs and Director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington. He is the author or co-author of nine  books on the presidency, the mass media, public opinion and journalism. The CBYX-YP/DAIS “Living and Working in the East” Workshop will convene members of the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Young Professionals Program (CBYX-YP) and Alumni at the German-American Institute (DAIS) in Leipzig. Together, we want to discuss issues of high relevance for transatlantic democracies and the experience of living and working in eastern Germany.

In the span of the last thirty years, Eastern Germany has undergone a swift transformation. Among the most crucial changes has been its transition toward openness to the globalized business arena and to fostering transatlantic ties. Presently, the region stands out as a center of change within Germany and the west, where people, locales, and establishments have been dealing with sweeping alterations in their work landscapes and their connections with western Germany.

At the workshop, we will look at historical and possible future trajectories of cultural exchange programs between the US and eastern Germany. CBYXers and esteemed guests will be encouraged to share their experiences of living and working in the East. Together, we want to reflect on and discuss how international and cultural exchange can benefit Germany and the United States in their quest to build and maintain relationships and further democracy,  and specifically how it can make a difference in Eastern Germany.

Die deutschen Founding Fathers: Johannes Ehrmann erzählt zum ersten Mal Amerikas Revolution und den Unabhängigkeitskrieg als deutsche Familiengeschichte. Mit großer Erzählkunst verwebt er das Leben der Mühlenbergs mit den bahnbrechenden Ereignissen ihrer Zeit. Packend schildert er Schicksal und Wirken dieser deutscher Migranten, die Amerika in ein neues Jahrhundert steuerten, und bietet dabei eine neue Sicht auf den alten Mythos USA.

Ehrmann ist ZEIT-Redakteur und Autor mehrerer Sachbücher.

Der ukrainische Autor Ostap Slyvynsky hat Menschen seines Landes zugehört und kleine Monologe aufgezeichnet, in denen es um Wörter geht. Wörter, die ihnen nach der vollständigen Invasion der Ukraine wichtig wurden, aufgefallen sind, eine andere Bedeutung erhalten haben. Diese Texte hat er zu einem "Wörterbuch des Krieges" zusammengestellt. Dieses Buch ist bereits in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt worden. Aber wie ist es möglich ein Wörterbuch des Krieges in eine Sprache zu übertragen, deren Sprecher im Frieden leben? Was bleibt von der literarischen Form des ABCdariums wenn die Wörter nicht passen? Die Lektorin der deutschen Ausgabe, Dr. Nina Weller im Gespräch mit dem Autor und Übersetzer*innen seiner deutschen und weiteren Ausgaben.

Das Gespräch wird auf ukrainisch und deutsch geführt, mit jeweiliger Übersetzung.

A Decade of American Space Leipzig

American Space Leipzig was founded in December 2013, spearheaded by the late Prof. Crister S. Garrett. American Space Leipzig is an initiative between the Institute for American Studies, the Leipzig University Library, and the U.S. Government to promote transatlantic dialogue in Eastern Germany. It served as the foundation for and is since organized and coordinated by the Deutsch-Amerikanische Institut Sachsen.

Four Years of DAI Sachsen

DAI Sachsen is also celebrating four years since its founding in February 2020. Since then DAI Sachsen has organized hundreds of events and reached thousands of people in eastern Germany with its work.

Der Privatdetektiv Philip Marlowe bringt seinen Freund Terry Lennox über die Grenze nach Mexiko. Später wird er von der Polizei als vermeintlicher Fluchthelfer verhaftet, denn Lennox soll seine Frau ermordet haben. Der Versuch, Lennox’ Unschuld zu beweisen, wird durch dessen angeblichen Selbstmord nicht eben erleichtert. Und je tiefer Marlowe in das mysteriöse Geschehen eindringt, desto mehr gerät er selbst in Gefahr.

Die von Raymond Chandler erdachte Figur des Philip Marlow ist der Inbegriff des heruntergekommenen, dem Alkohol nicht abgeneigten, rauen Detektivs, der in zahlreichen Film noir der 1940er Jahre in Szene gesetzt wurde. Robert Altmans Adaption versetzt Marlow in das glitzernde Los Angeles der frühen Siebziger Jahre und verwandelt ihn in ein Relikt der Vergangenheit – wie das Genre, das der Film kenntnisreich parodiert.

The californian metropolis is more than the dream factory Hollywood, it is the setting of countless cinematic stories, it perpetually plays itself: The cinematic landscape of Los Angeles is its architecture, its endless highways and palm-tree lined boulevards as well as its economic and political faultlines. In five movies from inside and outside the canon, our film series explores Los Angeles through the prism of its movies, discovering the city as a cultural geography, an ever-changing scenery and most of all, the home of millions of people from the most diverse backgrounds.

American Space Leipzig was founded in 2013 by the late Professor American History at the Institute for American Studies Leipzig, Prof. Crister S. Garrett. This institutionalization of American values and learning came as a natural consequence of its close ties to Leipzig University and serves as the foundation for what later became the German-American Institute Saxony (DAIS).

The annual Crister S. Garrett Memorial Lecture will celebrate Prof. Garrett's life and achievements. The first memorial lecture will be held by Dr. Steven E. Sokol, President of the American Council on Germany since 2015.

With welcoming remarks by the Garrett family and Consul General John Crosby.

Additionally, we wish to continue in Professor Garrett’s spirit by awarding the CSG Scholarship to a new cohort.

Supported by Fulbright Germany and the US Consulate in Leipzig.

1956 aus Ungarn geflüchtet, war Klaus Rózsa 40 Jahre lang aus politischen Gründen staatenlos. Die Polizei verfolgte ihn als Gewerkschafter, Ausländer, linken Journalisten und verdeckt auch als Juden.

Ein Filmscreening mit anschließendem Gespräch über das bewegte Leben eines Fotografen, die Pressefreiheit, die Liebe zu den USA und Antisemitismus.

“Modern Ukrainian Literature Undermines the Empire” comprises three lectures introducing modern Ukrainian East literature within a utopia/dystopia framework.

Prof. Brovko will analyze texts by Serhyi Zhadan and Lyuba Yakimchuk, considering influences from notable Donbass predecessors and the effects of 2008/2009 imperial propaganda. This literature reflects the traumas of those living near colonizers.

Dr. Zhygun will explore the war's herstory in Ukrainian women’s literature, focusing on novels by Vdovychenko, Duda, and Stiazhkina. The discussion will highlight the transformation of female characters from war victims to empowered figures affirming their national identity, interpreted through a postcolonial lens.

A cooperation between Leipzig University Library, Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut Sachsen, and American Space Leipzig and Institut für Slavisik at Leipzig University.

Dr. Zhygun will discuss MiniU “Our Heroes”- a volunteer project of teachers of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University to improve schoolchildren's knowledge of philology and help them to feel part of a community capable of facing challenges, helping, and supporting each other.

Prof. Brovko will review the newly published anthology of drama “Неназвана війна” (Unnamed war) with some plays authored by the students of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University.

A segment of the discussion will commemorate Viktoria Amelina, a Ukrainian writer, volunteer, and supporter of East Ukrainian universities and libraries. Amelina, who was tragically killed in a Russian missile attack four months ago, had been dedicated to aiding institutions under occupation and in evacuation.

Natalka Snyadanko; was born in Lviv, Ukraine, where she currently resides and has lived for most of her life. Sniadanko studied Ukrainian language and literature at the University of Lviv and Slavonic and Renaissance Studies at Freiburg University. She co-created an all-female literary group called ММЮННА ТУГА together with Marianna Kiyanovska, Mariana Savka and others. She won the Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski Literary Prize in 2011.

“Modern Ukrainian Literature Undermines the Empire” comprises three lectures introducing modern Ukrainian East literature within a utopia/dystopia framework.

Prof. Brovko will analyze texts by Serhyi Zhadan and Lyuba Yakimchuk, considering influences from notable Donbass predecessors and the effects of 2008/2009 imperial propaganda. This literature reflects the traumas of those living near colonizers.

Dr. Zhygun will explore the war's herstory in Ukrainian women’s literature, focusing on novels by Vdovychenko, Duda, and Stiazhkina. The discussion will highlight the transformation of female characters from war victims to empowered figures affirming their national identity, interpreted through a postcolonial lens.

Prof. Olena Brovko, full professor, born, studied and worked before 2014 in Luhansk (Donbass region); since 2014 in the status of temporarily and internally displaced person Prof. Brovko has been running the department of Ukrainian literature in Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University; Olena Brovko is also known as an essayist; 

Prof. Snizhana Zhygun (Kyiv); studied and worked in Kyiv; she is a Professor at the department of Ukrainian literature in Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University and researcher of Shevchenko Institute of Literature of The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The Oka Legacy (2015) ist ein Dokumentarfilm, der die Ereignisse der Oka-Krise von 1990 beleuchtet, eines 78-tägigen Konflikts zwischen der Mohawk Nation und der kanadischen Regierung. Der Konflikt wurde durch die geplante Erweiterung eines Golfplatzes und die Zerstörung eines heiligen Friedhofs ausgelöst und eskalierte schnell zu einem landesweiten Protest für die Souveränität der indigenen Bevölkerung. Der Film, bei dem Alanis Obomsawin Regie führte, bietet einen eindringlichen und intimen Blick auf die Ereignisse der Krise und ihre nachhaltigen Auswirkungen auf die indigenen Gemeinschaften und die kanadische Gesellschaft im Allgemeinen. Anhand von Interviews mit Beteiligten, darunter Mohawk-Krieger, Regierungsbeamte und Anwohner, bietet The Oka Legacy eine nuancierte und zum Nachdenken anregende Untersuchung eines der entscheidenden Momente der jüngeren kanadischen Geschichte.

The Oka Legacy (2015) is a documentary film that explores the events Oka Crisis of 1990, a 78-day standoff between the Mohawk Nation and the Canadian government. The conflict was sparked by the proposed expansion of a golf course and the destruction of a sacred burial ground, and quickly escalated into a nationwide protest for Indigenous sovereignty. The film, directed by Alanis Obomsawin, offers a powerful and intimate look at the events of the crisis, and its lasting impact on Indigenous communities and the broader Canadian society. Through interviews with participants, including Mohawk warriors, government officials, and local residents, The Oka Legacy provides a nuanced and thought-provoking examination of one of the defining moments in recent Canadian history.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) erzählt die Geschichte eines legendären Inuit-Helden in der Arktis. Unter der Regie von Zacharias Kunuk und produziert von Igloolik Isuma Productions erforscht der Film Themen wie Tradition, Rache und Spiritualität durch eine tiefgründige und fesselnde Erzählung. Mit seiner atemberaubenden Kameraführung und einer Besetzung, die ausschließlich aus Inuit besteht, wurde der Film weithin als Meilenstein des indigenen Kinos und als kraftvolle Hommage an die Kultur der Inuit gefeiert.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001) tells the story of a legendary Inuit hero in the Arctic. Directed by Zacharias Kunuk and produced by Igloolik Isuma Productions, the film explores themes of tradition, revenge, and spirituality through a rich and immersive narrative. With stunning cinematography and an all-Inuit cast, the film has been widely acclaimed as a landmark in indigenous cinema and a powerful tribute to Inuit culture.

Powwow Highway verbindet gekonnt Elemente von Road Movies und Buddy-Movies mit einem kritischen Blick auf das Leben indigener Gemeinschaften der USA während der 1970er Jahre. Die Freunde Buddy und Philbert fahren von der Reservation der Northern Cheyenne in Montana nach Santa Fe, um Buddys Schwester aus dem Gefängnis zu holen. Bis die Reise in einer klassischen Verfolgungsjagd mit der Polizei ihren Höhepunkt findet, erlebt das Publikum die wirtschaftliche Ausbeutung der Reservationen, Korruption und Gewalt innerhalb der Gemeinschaften, aber auch den stetigen Kampf um kulturelle und spirituelle Selbstbestimmung. Obwohl der Film nicht von indigenen Menschen produziert wurde, hat seine Besetzung die indigenen Schauspieler bekannt gemacht; seine oft selbst-ironische und vielschichtige Erzählweise diente als Inspiration für die kommenden Generationen indigener Filmemacher.

Powwow Highway skillfully combines elements of road movies and buddy movies with a critical look at the lives of indigenous communities in the United States during the 1970s. Friends Buddy and Philbert drive from the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana to Santa Fe to get Buddy's sister out of jail. Until the journey culminates in a classic police chase, the audience witnesses the economic exploitation of the reservations, corruption and violence within the communities, as well as the constant struggle for cultural and spiritual self-determination. Although the film was not produced by indigenous people, its cast has made indigenous actors famous; its often self-ironic and multi-layered storytelling has served as inspiration for generations of indigenous filmmakers to come.
