Diese Doppelausstellung verbindet zwei fotografische Perspektiven auf den russischen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine: eine Ausstellung aus der Ukraine und ein Leipziger Fotoprojekt über Ukrainer:innen, die hier Zuflucht gefunden haben. Gemeinsam eröffnen sie einen eindringlichen Blick auf das Erwachsenwerden im Ausnahmezustand und das Weiterleben nach der Flucht.
Coming of Age Amidst War, kuratiert von Irynka Hromotska (Kyiv Independent), zeigt Arbeiten von zehn ukrainischen Fotograf:innen, die dokumentieren, wie Jugendliche in der Ukraine ihren Alltag unter Beschuss, Verlust und permanenter Unsicherheit gestalten. Die Bilder sind zugleich Zeugnisse von Verletzlichkeit und kraftvoller Selbstbehauptung.
Ukrainian Portraits, fotografiert von Sophie Meuresch und kuratiert vom Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institut Sachsen, richtet den Blick auf Ukrainer:innen in Leipzig. Die Ausstellung vereint Porträts derselben Personen aus zwei Zeitpunkten: Fotografien aus dem Jahr 2022, kurz nach ihrer Flucht, und neue Aufnahmen aus dem Jahr 2025, die zeigen, wie sich ihre Lebenswege drei Jahre später entwickelt haben. Sie erzählen von neuen Chancen, fortdauernden Herausforderungen und den Spuren des Krieges, die trotz eines neuen Lebensortes bleiben.
In der Zusammenschau entsteht ein Dialog zwischen dort und hier: zwischen Jugend im Krieg und Alltag im Exil, zwischen der Realität in der Ukraine und dem Leben derjenigen, die Leipzig zu ihrem Zuhause gemacht haben. Die Ausstellung macht sichtbar, wie Menschen aus einer zerbrochenen Welt heraus Zukunft gestalten.
Die Ausstellung ist vom 17.2 – 5.4.2026 in der Bibliotheca Albertina zu sehen.

Indigenous America at 1776, Sovereignty, and Relationships with the US Government until Today
The first lecture of our series America 250: Society, History, Politics. With Dr. Frank Usbeck.
This lecture explores Indigenous America before, at, and after the founding of the United States and examines the evolving relationships between Native Americans and the U.S. government from 1776 to the present. The lecture offers a historical perspective to better understand the United States and its complex relationship with Indigenous Americans today.
Dr. Frank Usbeck is a historian and Curator for the Americas at the State Art Collections Dresden / Ethnographic Collections Saxony (SKD/SES). He earned his PhD in 2010 with a dissertation on Native American imagery in German periodicals and Nazi propaganda, later published as Fellow Tribesmen (Berghahn, 2015). His research focuses on Indigenous history, ethnic relations in North America, and the representation of Indigenous cultures in (post-)colonial societies.

A conversation with Sarah McCammon, Senior Fellow at Third Way.
Sarah McCammon is a Senior Fellow at the think tank Third Way, a national think tank and advocacy organization in Washington D.C. that champions moderate policy and political ideas. Third Way’s work on the center left acts as a critical bulwark against political extremism.
She served most recently at NPR as a national political correspondent and host of the NPR Politics Podcast, where she reported on presidential campaigns, the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and the intersection of politics and religion.
She is a sought-after speaker and the author of The Exvangelicals, a 2024 New York Times bestseller. Her journalism has been recognized with numerous national honors, including a 2023 Edward R. Murrow Award for reporting on reproductive rights.

Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook ist deutsch-amerikanische Politikwissenschaftlerin und eine der profiliertesten transatlantischen Stimmen der Gegenwart. An der Harvard Kennedy School war sie Mitbegründerin des Future of Diplomacy-Projekts und leitete das Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship. Die ehemalige Direktorin und Geschäftsführerin der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik begann ihre Karriere als Fernsehjournalistin bei CNN International in Atlanta und London, war Mitglied des Vorstands des European Policy Centre in Brüssel und als Strategieberaterin bei Roland Berger in Shanghai, Peking, Hamburg und Paris tätig. “Der amerikanische Weckruf” ist ihr erstes Buch.

Peter Rough ist Senior Fellow und Direktor des Center on Europe and Eurasia am Hudson Institute, das er im Dezember 2022 ins Leben gerufen hat. Er schreibt und kommentiert zur US-Außenpolitik, berät regelmäßig offizielle Delegationen, Medienvertreter und Wirtschaftsführer und organisiert mehrere Track-1.5-Dialoge und Konferenzen.
Zuvor war Herr Rough als Forschungsdirektor im Büro von George W. Bush tätig, wo er an dessen Memoiren Decision Points mitwirkte. Gemeinsam mit Leila Fawaz verfasste er A Land of Aching Hearts (Harvard University Press, 2014), eine Sozialgeschichte des Ersten Weltkriegs im Nahen Osten.
Von 2007 bis 2009 war er stellvertretender Direktor im White House Office of Strategic Initiatives. Darüber hinaus arbeitete er für die USAID und als Berater für das U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Herr Rough hat einen BA mit Auszeichnung (summa cum laude) von der George Washington University sowie einen MA von der Fletcher School der Tufts University. Er ist Vorstandsmitglied des Bastion Institute und der American Main Street Initiative. Herr Rough spricht Deutsch als Muttersprache.

This double exhibition combines two photographic perspectives on Russia's war against Ukraine: an exhibition from Ukraine and a Leipzig-based photo project about Ukrainians who have found refuge here. Together, they offer a poignant look at coming of age in a state of emergency and continuing life after fleeing.
Coming of Age Amidst War, curated by Irynka Hromotska (Kyiv Independent), shows works by ten Ukrainian photographers who document how young people in Ukraine shape their everyday lives amid bombardment, loss, and constant uncertainty. The images are both testimonies of vulnerability and powerful self-assertion.
Ukrainian Portraits, photographed by Sophie Meuresch and curated by the German-American Institute Saxony, focuses on Ukrainians in Leipzig. The exhibition brings together portraits of the same people from two different points in time: photographs from 2022, shortly after their flight, and new photographs from 2025, showing how their lives have developed three years later. They tell of new opportunities, ongoing challenges, and the traces of war that remain despite a newfound home.
Taken together, the exhibition creates a dialogue between there and here: between youth in war and everyday life in exile, between the reality in Ukraine and the lives of those who have made Leipzig their home. The exhibition shows how people from a broken world are shaping their future.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Leipzig University Library and the America House Lviv. It was made possible by funding from the state of Saxony and the German Foreign Office.
Stolpertexte: Jüdische Lebenswege in die USA · Mit Dana von Suffrin & Olga Grjasnowa
Das Leo Baeck Institute – New York | Berlin hat sein Archiv in einem einzigartigen Literaturprojekt für Autorinnen und Autoren geöffnet. Unter dem Titel „Stolpertexte: Literatur gegen das Vergessen“ (Hentrich & Hentrich 2024) sind Autorinnen und Autoren auf die Spur von Lebenszeugnissen deutscher Juden im Nationalsozialismus gegangen, deren persönliche Dokumente im Archiv des Leo-Baeck-Institutes gesammelt sind. Daraus sind literarische Texte entstanden, die an die Leben und Hoffnungen der Menschen erinnern, denen unter der Nazi-Terrorherrschaft alles genommen wurde.
Dana von Suffrin und Olga Grjasnowa werden an diesem Abend aus ihren Texten lesen und im Anschluss über Erinnerung, Sprache und jüdische Perspektiven in Deutschland und darüber hinaus diskutieren. Moderiert von Nicolas van Veen.
Dana von Suffrin
geboren 1985 in München, studierte in München, Neapel und Jerusalem. Ihr Romandebüt »Otto« wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, ihr zweiter Roman „Nochmal von vorne“ stand auf der Longlist des Deutschen Buchpreises 2024. Im März 2026 erscheint ihr neuer Roman „Toxibaby“.

Olga Grjasnowa
geboren 1984 in Baku, Aserbaidschan, veröffentlichte 2012 ihr Romandebüt „Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt“, das von Pola Beck fürs Kino verfilmt wurde. Grjasnowas Werke wurden in 15 Sprachen übersetzt und fürs Radio und die Bühne adaptiert. Sie ist Professorin an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien. Ihr zuletzt erschienener Roman heißt „Juli, August, September“.

Seit 2020 ist Nicolas van Veen am Literaturhaus Leipzig, seit 2024 mitverantwortlich für Programm, Moderationen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und kurartiert die Reihe „Literatur trifft Film“ in Kooperation mit den Passage Kinos.

(DE) Zwischen ethnomusikologischer Bewahrung und freier Interpretation transformiert die deutsch-ukrainische Musikerin und Künstlerin Melanka Piroschik traditionelle und rituelle Lieder und zeigt, wie ukrainische Musik in all ihren Facetten in der Diaspora gewahrt werden und wachsen kann.
(UA) Між етномузикологічним збереженням та вільною інтерпретацією німецько-українська музикантка та художниця Меланка Пірожик трансформує традиційні та ритуальні пісні та показує, як українська музика у всіх її проявах може зберігатися та розвиватися в діаспорі.
(EN) Between ethnomusicological preservation and free interpretation, German-Ukrainian musician and artist Melanka Piroschik transforms traditional and ritual songs, demonstrating how Ukrainian music in all its facets can be preserved and grow in the diaspora.

Iryna Tsilyk (born 1982 in Kyiv, Ukraine) studied at the Kyiv University of Theatre, Cinema and Television and now works as a director. She writes poetry, songs, and prose, and her work has been translated into German, Swedish, Czech, and Polish, among other languages. Tsilyk is the author and director of the acclaimed short films Blue Hour (2008), Commemoration (2012), Home (2016), and The Earth Is Blue as an Orange (2020). Her song lyrics have been nominated for the Ukrainian literary competition prize. In 2011, she received the Coronation of the Word award. She is married to the writer Artem Chekh and has a son.

In „Die Erde ist blau wie eine Orange“ zeichnet die ukrainische Filmemacherin Iryna Tsilyk ein eindringliches Porträt des Alltags einer Familie, die nahe der Frontlinie im Donbas lebt – noch vor der russischen Vollinvasion der Ukraine. Im Mittelpunkt stehen insbesondere die Kinder, die unter der ständigen Präsenz des Krieges aufwachsen.
Die jugendliche Tochter Myroslava träumt davon, sich an einer Filmschule zu bewerben, und beginnt, ihren eigenen Film zu drehen. Dadurch verschwimmen zunehmend die Grenzen zwischen Dokumentarfilm und selbst inszenierter Erzählung: Sehen wir Myroslavas Film oder Tsilyks Dokumentation? Und was verbindet die Widerstandskraft und Kreativität dieser Familie mit der berühmten surrealistischen Zeile „Die Erde ist blau wie eine Orange“?
Im Anschluss an die Vorführung findet ein Gespräch mit der Regisseurin Iryna Tsilyk statt.

Iryna Tsilyk (geb. 1982 in Kiev, Ukraine) studierte an der Kyiwer Universität für Theater, Cinematografie und Fernsehen und arbeitet heute als Regisseurin. Sie schreibt Gedichte, Lieder und Prosatexte und wurde unter anderem ins Deutsche, Schwedische, Tschechische und Polnische übersetzt. Ihre Liedtexte wurden für den Preis des ukrainischen Literaturwettbewerbs nominiert. 2011 erhielt sie den Preis Coronation of word. Sie ist mit dem Schriftsteller Artem Tschech verheiratet und hat einen Sohn.

In The Earth Is Blue as an Orange, Ukrainian filmmaker Iryna Tsilyk portrays the everyday life of a family living close to the frontline in the Donbas region, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The focus lies especially on the children, who grow up under the constant presence of war.
The teenage daughter Myroslava dreams of applying to film school and begins shooting her own film. As a result, the boundaries between documentary and self-directed fiction gradually blur: Are we watching Myroslava’s film or Tsilyk’s documentary? And what connects this family’s resilience and creativity with the famous surrealist line, “The earth is blue like an orange”?
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with director Iryna Tsilyk.

Iryna Tsilyk (born 1982 in Kyiv, Ukraine) studied at the Kyiv University of Theatre, Cinema and Television and now works as a director. She writes poetry, songs, and prose, and her work has been translated into German, Swedish, Czech, and Polish, among other languages. Tsilyk is the author and director of the acclaimed short films Blue Hour (2008), Commemoration (2012), Home (2016), and The Earth Is Blue as an Orange (2020). Her song lyrics have been nominated for the Ukrainian literary competition prize. In 2011, she received the Coronation of the Word award. She is married to the writer Artem Chekh and has a son.

Die englischsprachige Podiumsdiskussion beleuchtet die Rolle der transatlantischen Beziehungen im Kontext des russischen Angriffskriegs gegen die Ukraine. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Politik und Verantwortung der Vereinigten Staaten und der NATO, europäische Perspektiven, insbesondere aus Ost- und Mitteleuropa, politische Erwartungen und sicherheitspolitische Signale sowie die westliche Unterstützung und langfristige Verantwortung gegenüber der Ukraine.

The discussion will focus on the policies and responsibilities of the United States and NATO, European responses, particularly from Eastern and Central Europe, as well as political expectations, security commitments, and the long-term responsibility of Western partners toward Ukraine.
Together with leading experts, the panel will explore how transatlantic cooperation has evolved since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, which signals Ukraine is receiving from its Western allies, and what forms of political, military, and societal support are necessary for Ukraine’s future.

„Coming of Age amidst War // Ukrainian Portraits“

Die Ukrainian Week wird mit einer Fotoausstellung eröffnet, die junge Ukrainerinnen und Ukrainer und ihre Lebensrealitäten im Krieg porträtiert. Eine Doppelausstellung über Jugend im Krieg und Leben im Exil.
Diese Doppelausstellung verbindet zwei fotografische Perspektiven auf den russischen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine: eine Ausstellung aus der Ukraine und ein Leipziger Fotoprojekt über Ukrainer:innen, die hier Zuflucht gefunden haben. Gemeinsam eröffnen sie einen eindringlichen Blick auf das Erwachsenwerden im Ausnahmezustand und das Weiterleben nach der Flucht.
Coming of Age Amidst War, kuratiert von Irynka Hromotska (Kyiv Independent), zeigt Arbeiten von zehn ukrainischen Fotograf:innen, die dokumentieren, wie Jugendliche in der Ukraine ihren Alltag unter Beschuss, Verlust und permanenter Unsicherheit gestalten. Die Bilder sind zugleich Zeugnisse von Verletzlichkeit und kraftvoller Selbstbehauptung.
Ukrainian Portraits, fotografiert von Sophie Meuresch und kuratiert vom Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institut Sachsen, richtet den Blick auf Ukrainer:innen in Leipzig. Die Ausstellung vereint Porträts derselben Personen aus zwei Zeitpunkten: Fotografien aus dem Jahr 2022, kurz nach ihrer Flucht, und neue Aufnahmen aus dem Jahr 2025, die zeigen, wie sich ihre Lebenswege drei Jahre später entwickelt haben. Sie erzählen von neuen Chancen, fortdauernden Herausforderungen und den Spuren des Krieges, die trotz eines neuen Lebensortes bleiben.
In der Zusammenschau entsteht ein Dialog zwischen dort und hier: zwischen Jugend im Krieg und Alltag im Exil, zwischen der Realität in der Ukraine und dem Leben derjenigen, die Leipzig zu ihrem Zuhause gemacht haben. Die Ausstellung macht sichtbar, wie Menschen aus einer zerbrochenen Welt heraus Zukunft gestalten.
Die Ausstellung ist vom 17.2 – 5.4.2026 in der Bibliotheca Albertina zu sehen.

Eric Langenbacher is a Teaching Professor and Director of the Senior Honors Program in the Department of Government, Georgetown University, where he teaches courses on comparative politics. He is also Director of the Society, Culture and Politics Program at the American-German Institute. He studied in Canada before starting graduate work at Georgetown in 1996. He was awarded a Fulbright grant in 1999-2000 and held the Ernst Reuter Fellowship at the Free University of Berlin in 1999-2000, the Hopper Memorial Fellowship at Georgetown in 2000-2001, and was selected School of Foreign Service faculty member of the year by the 2009 graduating class. He has taught at George Washington University, Washington College, and at UNSAM in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is the author of Comparative Politics: Mapping Institutions, Power, and Legitimacy (2024), co-author of "The German Polity, 12th edition" (2021) and has also published numerous edited volumes including Power and the Past: Collective Memory and International Relations (with Yossi Shain, 2010), Dynamics of Memory and Identity in Contemporary Europe (with Ruth Wittlinger and Bill Niven, 2013), and Shifting Paradigms in Contemporary German Politics and Policy (2024). His research interests center on political culture, collective memory, political institutions, public opinion and U.S., German and European politics, society, and business.

In her keynote, Julia Friedlander, CEO of Atlantik Brücke, will explore the impact of shifting global power structures on the transatlantic alliance and the broader role of the West in the international order.
The event will take place in English and the lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A as well as a reception.

Julia Friedlander joined Atlantik-Brücke as chief executive officer in June 2022.
Before coming to Berlin, she spent two years at the Atlantic Council as the founding director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative, which handles the intersection between finance, economics and national security.
She spent a decade in the U.S. government. She was senior policy advisor for Europe in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Treasury from 2015 to 2017 and from 2019 to 2020, focusing on global sanctions policy and financial regulation, and as a macroeconomist in the Department of International Affairs.
From April 2017 to July 2019, she was detailed to the White House as the director for the European Union, Southern Europe, and Economic Affairs at the National Security Council, where she coordinated U.S. executive branch policy on transatlantic relations and the European Union and staffing the national security advisor.

PD Dr. Martin Lüthe is an associate professor for American cultural studies at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. A former member of the PGF, his dissertation focused on Color-Line and Crossing-Over: Motown and Performances of Blackness in 1960s American Culture (2011) and his habilitation on Wire Writing: Media Change in the Culture of the Progressive Era (2025).
The keynote is organized by American Studies Leipzig with the support of the Graduate Academy Leipzig and DAIS.

The 35th Annual Conference of the Postgraduate Forum (PGF) of the German Association for American Studies (DGfA/GAAS) is organized and hosted by doctoral candidates of Leipzig University's Institute for American Studies. It takes place on November 6-8, 2025, at the Graduate Academy Leipzig. The theme of this year's conference is "Crisis and Resilience in American Literature, Culture, History, and Politics."
From 6-8 November 2025, the Institute for American Studies at Leipzig University will host the Postgraduate Forum (PGF) of the German Association for American Studies (GAAS). The three-day conference will take place at the Graduate Academy Leipzig to bring together doctoral researchers in American Studies from all across Germany.

Neben einer Einordnung der zweiten Amtszeit von President Donald Trump durch Erica Larson Bautze, wird dieses Jahr auch die besondere Rolle des Supreme Court durch Heather Pruessing beleuchtet.
