Join us for a discussion on the unique history of the Jewish community in Germany and the critical role transatlantic relations have played in shaping its development. This event will explore the historical complexities, cultural resilience, and contemporary challenges facing Jewish communities in the wider transatlantic context in Germany today.
We will also explore how transatlantic partnerships have supported Jewish life in Germany, from historical reconstruction and reparations to promoting cross-cultural understanding, advocacy, and combating antisemitism. What can be learned from the transatlantic experience and how can it contribute to a vibrant Jewish future in Europe?

Trump’s 2nd Term: Checkin’ in… is a series of events in which we invite people living in the U.S. to reflect on the first 100 Days of Trump in office. It offers a unique opportunity to talk to Americans about their lived experiences, the last elections, and their thoughts on Trump’s first 100 days of his second term in office. On April 30, the official 100 day mark, ASL alumna Masa Ocvirk from the Wilson Center will share her experience of what is happening in Washington D.C.

Erica Larson Bautze is Deputy Director at the German American Institute Saxony. She hails from the Midwest (born in Chicago, grew up in Northwestern Wisconsin) and came to Germany as a CBYX-er. Erica studied political science, American Studies, and education at Leipzig University and began her career by instructing at Leipzig University and German Telecom institutions of higher education. She started in the EducationUSA program at DAIS in 2019 and has since taken over directing educational programming.

An informal panel conversation with alumni of U.S. exchange programs
DAIS is hosting an informal panel to distribute information about study abroad opportunities in the US. As American Studies students it can be a crucial part of one’s studies to go abroad and experience a culture in-person, through more than books, music, and film.
On the panel will be local university students and alumni who have studied abroad in the US, where they will share their experiences, from the application process to highlights and challenges of the exchange program to re-integration upon returning home.

CBYX-YP and Fulbright: Living and Working in Eastern Germany
The CBYX-YP/DAIS “Living and Working in Eastern Germany” Workshop will convene members of the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX-YP) and U.S. Fulbright Scholars, including scholars, students, and teaching assistants, at the German-American Institute of Saxony (DAIS) in Leipzig. Together, they will discuss issues of high relevance for transatlantic democracies and the experience of living and working in Eastern Germany.
The event will take place in the DAIS Workshop Space at Markt 9 in Leipzig, and will last from 10AM to 3PM, with a break for lunch.

Vor 135 Jahren eröffnete der amerikanische Industrielle Andrew Carnegie in einer Vorstadt Pittsburghs die erste von ihm finanzierte öffentliche Bibliothek, gefolgt von über 2800 weiteren Bauten weltweit. Schneider beleuchtet in seinem Essay die Bedeutung dieser Bibliotheken für die demokratische Gesellschaft und hinterfragt ihre sozialen und politischen Implikationen im Spannungsfeld von anspruchsvoller Architektur und öffentlicher Zugänglichkeit. Ein Gespräch über die Bibliotheksgeschichte mit Blick auf die gegenwärtige Rolle von Bibliotheken in der Öffentlichkeit.

Das nächste Treffen des Cafés Ukraїna findet am 21. Februar um 18:00 Uhr im Polnischen Institut Berlin in Leipzig statt.
In den letzten sechs Monaten haben wir aktiv über wichtige Ereignisse in der modernen Geschichte der Ukraine diskutiert und nachgedacht. Es wurde viel geschaut, gelesen, zugehört, Fragen gestellt und gesprochen. Dieses Mal wird im Rahmen von Café Ukraїna der Film des bekannten Dokumentarfilmregisseurs Evgeny Afineevsky „Freedom on Fire“ („Freiheit in Flammen“) gezeigt. Dieser Film widmet sich den jüngsten Ereignissen der ukrainischen Geschichte – der großen Invasion Russlands in die Ukraine. Der Film zeigt aus erster Hand die Schrecken der russischen Aggression und wie das ukrainische Volk in dieser neuen Realität überlebt.
Nach der Vorführung hat jede*r die Möglichkeit, sich mit Gleichgesinnten über die Eindrücke vom Film auszutauschen.
Und wie immer stehen Snacks und Getränke zur Verfügung.

Three of the participants retired in 2021, while the other three were active until just few weeks ago in January 2025. They are from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Alabama, Indiana, and North Carolina.

Her work focuses on political, social and cultural divides in America, including abortion policy and the intersections of politics and religion. She's also a frequent guest host for NPR news programs.
She has covered several presidential elections, including the 2016 campaign, when she reported on the rise of the Trump movement, divisions within the Republican Party over its future, and the role of religion in those debates. McCammon's reporting has documented the growing political power of the religious right culminating with the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, efforts by abortion rights advocates to push back, and the rising tide of white Christian nationalism.
This event is part of the U.S. Election Speakers series. Funded by the US Embassy in Berlin and implemented in cooperation between the Aspen Institute Berlin and the Association of German-American Centers.

The trauma of the Holodomor was hidden from public knowledge for decades during Soviet regime. As a hidden narrative it wandered through the literature and the memories of Ukrainian people around the world, never forgotten by those who suffered and lost their loved ones. But not only they remembered and wrote about. Prof. Anna Gaidash will highlight books about the Holodomor written by US-American authors (Bohdan Boychuk, Askold Melnyczuk, Eric Litteken) and will talk to Alexander Kratochvil about her research results.
November 25, 2024 is the official Holodomor Memorial Day.

Die ukrainische Woche geht in die zweite Runde. Am Eröffnungsabend steht die ukrainische Literatur in vornehmlich deutscher Übersetzung im Mittelpunkt. Der Herausgeber der Zeitschrift “Die Horen” berichtet von der Entstehung der neuesten Ausgabe: “Landschaft der Ukraine”, die ukrainische Texte in deutscher Übersetzung enthält. Mindestens eine der Hauptakteurinnen, Natalka Sniadanko, wird ebenfalls anwesend sein. An diesem Abend wird auch aus den Originalen und Übersetzungen gelesen.
Nach dem Auftakt geht es mit mehreren Veranstaltungen in den Häusern der Kooperationspartner weiter: Dabei wird über literarische Heldinnen philosophiert, in vergessenen Geheimnissen gestöbert, deren Aufdecken zum traumatischen und langsam aus der Vergessenheit auftauchenden “Holodomor” führt, in dessen Gedenkwoche diese Veranstaltungsreihe angesiedelt ist. Die Woche wird mit einer Party beschlossen, Musik und Tanz dürfen nicht fehlen.

DAIS in Zusammenarbeit mit TaMaR Germany und der Hillerschen Villa Zittau am Mitzvah Day des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland teil.
Gemeinsam befreien wir den Jüdischen Friedhof Görlitz von Laub und Geäst.
Der Mitzvah Day beruht auf der Überzeugung, dass jeder – wirklich Jeder – unsere Welt positiv beeinflussen kann. Das Konzept des Mitzvah Days basiert auf zentralen jüdischen Werten wie: Tikkun Olam („Verbesserung der Welt“), Tzedek („Gerechtigkeit“) und Gemilut Chassadim („Mildtätigkeit“). Juden sollen diese Werte leben und in ihrem Alltag verwirklichen. An einem festgelegten Tag im Jahr soll mit besonderen Projekten das Augenmerk auf diese Werte gelenkt werden. Am Mitzvah Day versuchen wir, weltweit mit vereinten Kräften in unzähligen kleinen Handlungen die Welt ein Stück besser zu machen.
Das Konzept eines Mitzvah Days entstand vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren in den USA. Die Idee eines weltweiten Tages der guten Taten Mitzvah Day International wurde 2008 in Großbritannien eingeführt. Im Jahr 2014 nahmen in 23 Ländern mehr als 35.000 Menschen an diesem von jüdischen Werten inspirierten Projekttag teil.
Der Zentralrat der Juden hat Mitzvah Day Deutschland im Jahr 2012 eingeführt. 2013 fand Mitzvah Day erstmalig bundesweit statt und ist schnell gewachsen.
