Elizabeth Rosner (geb. 1959 in Schenectady, New York) ist eine der wichtigsten Stimmen der Zweiten Generation in den USA. Ihr Vater, ein deutscher Jude aus Hamburg, war Überlebender des KZ Buchenwald, ihre Mutter, eine polnische Jüdin, überlebte das Ghetto von Wilna. Nach der Befreiung wanderten sie in die USA aus.
In Jenseits dieses Waldes verarbeitet Rosner in Gedichten und Prosa die Spuren von Erinnerung, Verlust und Weiterleben, aber auch das Ringen um die Bedeutung von Sprache, Religion und vererbter Erfahrung für ihr Leben als Tochter von Holocaustüberlebenden. Eindringlich und präzise beschreibt sie Bruchstellen der Familiengeschichte, Sprachlosigkeit sowie Möglichkeiten der Versöhnung; mit ihrem Vater, aber auch mit Nachfahren der Täter.
Dieses zweisprachige Buch, das 2026 im Leipziger Verlag für jüdische Kultur und Zeitgeschichte Hentrich & Hentrich erscheint, versammelt diese Gedichte erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung.
Entstanden ist die Übertragung im Rahmen eines universitären Projekts an der Technischen Universität Dortmund mit einer Gruppe von Studierenden der Fakultät Kulturwissenschaften, die sich der Herausforderung stellten, Rosners Sprache des Erinnerns in engem Austausch mit der Autorin gemeinsam ins Deutsche zu bringen. So wird Jenseits dieses Waldes nicht nur zur Begegnung zwischen Sprachen und Kulturen, sondern auch zwischen Generationen.

Grigory Stanskiy (*1988 in Moskau) machte eine Ausbildung im Ökolandbau und studierte Linguistik und Literarisches Schreiben in Stuttgart, Leipzig und Binghamton, USA. Er schreibt Lyrik und Prosa auf Deutsch und manchmal auf Englisch und Russisch, war Mitherausgeber der „Tippgemeinschaft” und ist Mitbegründer der „Solidarischen Lesebühne Leipzig”.

In this workshop with author and teacher Elizabeth Rosner, we will explore a variety of approaches to writing about our personal and collective inheritance. Focusing on generative exercises rather than critique, the session is designed to provide meaningful support for writers especially interested in broadening as well as deepening their material.

With welcoming remarks by Mayor Sven Schulze and U.S. Consul General Jodi Breisler, we aim to strengthen exchange among current and former participants of transatlantic programs.
The event is open to current and former participants of transatlantic exchange programs, exchange program coordinators, people interested in exchange opportunities in the U.S., expats, and friends of transatlantic relations.
Over coffee and cake, the meeting will offer an opportunity to connect, reconnect, network, and exchange ideas about transatlantic engagement in the region.
The gathering is part of the Meet the USA Day organized by the U.S. Consulate General Leipzig and the City of Chemnitz.

Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook ist deutsch-amerikanische Politikwissenschaftlerin und eine der profiliertesten transatlantischen Stimmen der Gegenwart. An der Harvard Kennedy School war sie Mitbegründerin des Future of Diplomacy-Projekts und leitete das Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship. Die ehemalige Direktorin und Geschäftsführerin der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik begann ihre Karriere als Fernsehjournalistin bei CNN International in Atlanta und London, war Mitglied des Vorstands des European Policy Centre in Brüssel und als Strategieberaterin bei Roland Berger in Shanghai, Peking, Hamburg und Paris tätig. “Der amerikanische Weckruf” ist ihr erstes Buch.

Half an Hour with… Sarah Copeland Hanzas
Half an Hour with… is a transatlantic discussion series organized by the Association of German-American Centers (VDAZ). Once a month, we host a 30-minute discussion with experts who provide insightful and concise perspectives on the United States and German-American relations.
In June, we will be welcoming Sarah Copeland Hanzas, Vermont’s Secretary of State and a former member of the Vermont House of Representatives. During our conversation with her, we will discuss the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. As Secretary of State, she manages the Elections Division of Vermont, which oversees and protects the integrity of the state’s voting system. The conversation will analyze the current political scene surrounding the elections and shed light on their potential outcomes and impacts.

Sarah Copeland Hanzas is Vermont’s 39th Secretary of State, elected in November 2022. She has lived, gone to school, and worked in Vermont since 1971 and her life and career have always centered on service. She has been an educator, a youth coach, a small business owner, and a state legislator. During her 18-year legislative career she served as Majority Leader, was Co-Chair of the Climate Solutions Caucus, and was Chair of the House Government Operations Committee. Sarah served on the Executive Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures. She is passionate about civics and has made civic education and engagement a major priority for her office. She currently serves on the Executive Board of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). Sarah lives in Bradford with her husband, John. They have three adult children.
The American Revolution and the Birth of Modern Social Thought
The fourth lecture of our series America 250: Society, History, Politics. With Prof. Dr. Heiko Beyer.
Sociology understands itself as the science of civil society (“bürgerliche Gesellschaft”) — yet where and when does this object actually become available to observation? Standard histories of the discipline reach back to the French Revolution, occasionally to England’s Glorious Revolution. The American Revolution, by contrast, hardly appears at all. This lecture corrects that blind spot.
Drawing on my book Horizont der Moderne (Campus 2021), I argue that the three system‑parts of early sociology — the natural history of mankind (England), the science of founding (France) and the science of emancipation (Germany) — became thinkable, plausible and politically urgent only after they had been lived in North America. The frontier mythology, the practice of public freedom in town meetings and associations, and the constitutional act conceived as a novus ordo seclorum form the lifeworld horizon against which Comte, Marx and Spencer first articulate their sociological designs.
The American experience is transmitted not through textual influence alone, but through intermediaries who had crossed the Atlantic or read those who did: Saint‑Simon, who fought at Yorktown in 1781 before mentoring the young Comte; Tocqueville and Beaumont, whose reports Marx absorbs in his Paris years of 1843–44; and the English Dissenters around Birmingham and Derby, whose support for the American Revolution shaped Spencer’s evolutionary sociology in ways the late Spencer was at pains to disavow.
The genealogy is not merely of antiquarian interest. A sociology that does not know its own prehistory risks degenerating into the ideology of the very society it claims to analyze. Reconstructing the Atlantic horizon of the classics is therefore at the same time an exercise in disciplinary self‑clarification — and a reminder that the founding event of modern social thought lies, in part, west of the Atlantic.
Heiko Beyer is Heisenberg Professor of Sociology at Heinrich‑Heine‑Universität Düsseldorf. His research focuses on the sociology of ideology, antisemitism, populism, social movements, and the history of social theory.

Understanding America’s present through its past allows for a deeper and more nuanced view of current political, social, and cultural dynamics.
The lecture series is open to students and the general public and invites all interested audiences to engage in discussion and critical reflection on the history and present of the United States.

200 Years Consulate General Leipzig: With CG Jodi Breisler
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate General, the German-American Institute Saxony cordially invites you to a special lounge talk at Club International with Jodi Breisler, who has been serving as U.S. Consul General in Leipzig since October 2025. We are honored to be able to host this event on the very day, that the Consulate was opened in Leipzig 200 years ago.
For two centuries, the partnership between the United States and Germany has shaped political, economic, and societal cooperation—grounded in shared values, close collaboration, and a continuous dialogue. Against the backdrop of profound geopolitical changes, the discussion will explore how this long-standing relationship can continue to evolve: which impulses are needed to strengthen existing ties, open new perspectives, and ensure that transatlantic cooperation remains resilient and forward-looking, in particular in regards to people-to-people- diplomacy.

Jodi Breisler has been serving as U.S. Consul General in Leipzig since October 2025, representing the United States in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. She brings extensive diplomatic experience from previous roles at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations Agencies in Rome, and postings in London, Baghdad, and Athens. With her international background and recent arrival in Leipzig, she offers fresh insights into regional engagement and transatlantic cooperation.

David Frum is a writer at The Atlantic magazine and the author of two books dealing with the Trump presidency: the 2018 New York Times bestseller, Trumpocracy - The Corruption of the American Republic and Trumpocalypse - Restoring American Democracy, published in 2020. From 2001-2002, he served as a special assistant and speechwriter to President George W. Bush during and after the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
Frum earned a Bachelor and a Master of Arts in history at Yale, then a Doctor of Law degree at Harvard. He is a recognized intellectual leader of the American conservative movement and was one of the first and foremost conservative Republicans to sound the alarm about the challenges posed by the Trump presidency. His prophetic 2017 cover story in the Atlantic, How to Build an Autocracy, has been one of the most cited works of the Trump years.

Nature, Progress, Frontier: The Westward Expansion and the America’s Myth of Founding
The third lecture of our series America 250: Society, History, Politics. With Dr. Robert Zwarg.
Many of the images and ideas associated with the United States of America today can be traced back to the 19th century and the process called the "westward expansion“. Much more than a concrete material settlement process, the westward expansion informs the U.S.’ understanding as a nation and has had a enormous impact symbolically and ideologically. The lecture will trace some of the motifs that eventually created the image of the „Wild West“ and analyze them within the framework of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory.

1776: Pop Culture and Politics
The second lecture of our series America 250: Society, History, Politics. With Prof. Dr. Charlotte Lerg.
The Revolution and the Declaration of Independence are firmly lodged in U.S. American memory, culture, and identity. All of these are deeply politcial, and so is popular culture, when we look closely. Legends and lore of of 1776 are deeply engrained the everyday, from childrens books to political rhetoric, from Broadway and late night comedy to advertizing and memes. The lecture will take a look at how pop culture and politics have long been closely aligned when it came to telling the story of the founding of the United States. It asks what this reveals—not only for the current moment—about memory and history caught between usable pasts and nationalist propaganda.

A Serious Man is a 2009 black comedy-drama film written, produced, edited, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Set in 1967, the film stars Michael Stuhlbarg as a Minnesotan Jewish man whose life crumbles both professionally and personally, leading him to questions about his faith.

Chernobyl, Three Mile Island und ihre Bedeutung für die globale Erinnerungskultur
40 Jahre Tschernobyl, Transatlantisches Symposium
Die Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig und das DAI Sachsen laden in Kooperation zu einem kulturwissenschaftlichen Symposium ein, das den 40. Jahrestag der Katastrophe von Tschernobyl zum Anlass nimmt, über Tschernobyl und Three Mile Island sowie ihre Bedeutung für die globale Erinnerungskultur nachzudenken.
Vier Jahrzehnte nach der Katastrophe von Tschernobyl soll der Blick dabei bewusst über nationale Perspektiven hinausgehen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen ukrainische, belarusische und amerikanische Zugänge zu nuklearer Katastrophe, Erinnerung, kultureller Verarbeitung und politischer Deutung. Das Symposium fragt danach, wie sich diese Ereignisse in Literatur, Essayistik, Popkultur und öffentlichem Gedächtnis eingeschrieben haben und welche Bedeutung sie bis heute für die transatlantische Auseinandersetzung mit Risiko, Verantwortung und Zukunft haben.
Das Programm umfasst drei Impulsvorträge, an die sich eine gemeinsame Gesprächsrunde anschließt:
Dr. Nina Weller (Leibniz-Znstitut für Literatur- und Kulturforschung Berlin) spricht über Ales Adamowitschs Essays und sein Engagement gegen die radioaktive Gefahr sowie für die Aufarbeitung der Tschernobyl-Katastrophe.
PD Dr. Alexander Kratochvil (LMU München) gibt einen Überblick über die ukrainische Literatur zu Tschernobyl, von den unmittelbar nach dem GAU entstandenen Texten bis hin zu späteren Werken, etwa von Oksana Sabuschko, Juri Andruchowytsch und sogar dem Computerspiel S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl als Teil der kulturellen Auseinandersetzung.
Annika Schadewaldt (Institut für Amerikanistik der Universität Leipzig) und Dr. Lena Pfeifer (Universität Würzburg), Herausgeberinnen eines Sammelbands zur Nuklearenergie in der US-amerikanischen Kultur, widmen sich der HBO-Serie Chernobyl und ihrer Einordnung in die US-Popkultur in vergleichender Perspektive mit Darstellungen anderer Reaktorunfälle wie Three Mile Island.
Moderiert wird die Veranstaltung von Dr. Sophia Manns-Süßbrich.

Metin Hakverdi hat am 28. Mai 2025 das Amt des Koordinators für die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit angetreten.

Die Lage in der Welt spitzt sich zu, die geopolitische Ordnung sortiert sich rasant neu. Eskalation im Nahen Osten, der Krieg in der Ukraine sowie andauernde handelspolitische Differenzen zwischen Europa und den USA prägen derzeit die internationale Politik. Gemeinsam mit Metin Hakverdi, Koordinator der Bundesregierung für die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit, möchten wir an diesem Abend einen Blick auf die deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen werfen und diskutieren, welche Herausforderungen und Perspektiven sich daraus für uns in Deutschland und Europa ergeben, von der großen politischen Bühne bis hin zur People-to-people-Diplomacy.
Werden die transatlantischen Beziehungen zentraler Pfeiler für Sicherheit, Wirtschaft und politische Zusammenarbeit des Westens bleiben, welche Rolle kann und sollte Deutschland in der geopolitischen Neusortierung der Weltordnung einnehmen und wie belastbar ist unsere Freundschaft zu den USA?
Zur Person:
Metin Hakverdi ist seit 2013 Mitglied des Deutschen Bundestages. Seit 2025 ist er Koordinator der Bundesregierung für die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit und befasst sich in dieser Funktion insbesondere mit den politischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Europa und den USA. Der Volljurist engagiert sich seit vielen Jahren in der Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik mit besonderem Fokus auf die transatlantische Partnerschaft.

Directed by Sergio Leone from a screenplay he co-wrote with Leonardo Benvenuti, Piero De Bernardi, Enrico Medioli, Franco Arcalli and Franco Ferrini, the film stars Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, Joe Pesci, Burt Young, Tuesday Weld and Treat Williams.

Indigenous America at 1776, Sovereignty, and Relationships with the US Government until Today
The first lecture of our series America 250: Society, History, Politics. With Dr. Frank Usbeck.
This lecture explores Indigenous America before, at, and after the founding of the United States and examines the evolving relationships between Native Americans and the U.S. government from 1776 to the present. The lecture offers a historical perspective to better understand the United States and its complex relationship with Indigenous Americans today.
Dr. Frank Usbeck is a historian and Curator for the Americas at the State Art Collections Dresden / Ethnographic Collections Saxony (SKD/SES). He earned his PhD in 2010 with a dissertation on Native American imagery in German periodicals and Nazi propaganda, later published as Fellow Tribesmen (Berghahn, 2015). His research focuses on Indigenous history, ethnic relations in North America, and the representation of Indigenous cultures in (post-)colonial societies.

America 250: Society, History, Politics. This public lecture series explores the history of the United States from the precolonial age and early settlement through American Independence and the Civil War. Against the backdrop of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the series takes a historical perspective to better understand where the country stands today.
By examining key historical turning points, debates, and conflicts that shaped American society, politics, and identity, the lectures offer valuable insights into contemporary developments in the United States. Understanding America’s present through its past allows for a deeper and more nuanced view of current political, social, and cultural dynamics.
The lecture series is open to students and the general public and invites all interested audiences to engage in discussion and critical reflection on the history and present of the United States.
