Freiberg Futures Forum

Discussing Transformations in Transatlantic Societies from Regional Perspectives

June 2/3, 2023+++Hosted by the German-American Institute Saxony (DAIS) at the Technical University of Freiberg+++Travel and Lodging Expenses Covered+++Application Deadline Extended!

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Join DAIS for the first Freiberg Futures Forum (FFF). Together, we will discuss and develop theses for addressing green transformation from regional perspectives. Forum stipends will be available for selected participants.

The (FFF) brings together multidisciplinary students and experts from the US, eastern Germany, and beyond. In two days of workshops and seminars, we will discuss how to build a global green future together. The FFF seeks to specifically discuss regional and eastern German perspectives that can benefit this transatlantic debate.

Addressing green transformation in transatlantic societies includes the effects climate change has on democracy, cultures and ways of living together, security, and technology. As a forum, we will articulate a tangible list of theses that address the transformations necessary to make life more sustainable—in the transatlantic space, and beyond. The FFF theses will be made available to policy makers in Germany, Europe, and the US.

The FFF will be part of the annual Transatlantic Student Summit program at DAIS, and feature the work of our TSS fellows who traveled the American Midwest in September 2022. Forum stipends will include lodging accommodation, reimbursements for costs of travel, and a meal allowance.

Part of DAIS’ Transatlantic Democracy Workshop Series

German American Institute Saxony (DAIS), Markt 9, 04109 Leipzig

Saturday, May 6, 2023

10am-3pm

___

The CBYX/DAIS Transatlantic Democracy Workshop will convene members of the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Young Professionals Program (CBYX) at the German-American Institute (DAIS) in Leipzig. Together, we want to discuss issues of high relevance for transatlantic democracies against the backdrop of eastern German experiences.

Eastern Germany has undergone rapid transformation in the last three decades. One of the most pivotal changes entailed opening up not only to a globalizing world, but also to transatlantic relations. Today, the region continues to be one of the most transformative in the transatlantic space, as people, places, and institutions face yet another fundamental transformation: addressing climate change through decarbonizing societies.

At the workshop, we will look at historical and possible future trajectories of cultural exchange programs between the US and eastern Germany. CBYXers will be encouraged to share their experiences of working in the East. Together, we want to reflect on and discuss how international and cultural exchange can benefit democracies in their quest to address mutual global challenges like climate change.

Participants will also become acquainted with DAIS’ Freiberg Regional Futures Forum (FFF) in June 2023. They can apply to be part of a fellowship group that develops theses from eastern Germany for “building a global green future together”—this year’s theme for the general German-American Futures Forum in DC later in 2023.

The deadline has already passed. If you have any questions, please contact

The Climate and Biodiversity Crisis, and the Transatlantic Relationship w/ Dr. Sabrina Schulz

Lecture Series on the Future of the Transatlantic Relationship

Third Event on Ecology, Climate Change, and a Just Transition

Dr. Sabrina Schulz, United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Germany

Dr. Sabrina Schulz, United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Germany

At the NATO-headquarters in Brussels, member states summoned this week and called for the organization to act as a »forum for democratic values« also facing China’s rising global influence. Earlier this week, the G7-summit in the UK revitalized an important multilateral format, as global leaders made climate a priority using rhetoric of utmost urgency. In their final communique, the year 2021 was called a »turning point for our planet« and summitteers pledged a »green revolution.«

Our third lecture at the Transatlantic Student Summit 2021 addresses ecological and sustainability issues. Facing the climate crisis, ecology and sustainability issues lie at the intersection of security, trade, technology, and energy. The named areas of human activity and their relation with natural resources, air, water, land, flora and fauna has sometimes been underrepresented in more orthodox conceptions of geopolitics and societal discourse. However, latest with the proposed Green (New) Deal(s), ecology and sustainability issues have arrived at the forefront of the global and transatlantic political debate about how to steer transformations ahead like the decarbonization of societies. Studying issues of ecology and sustainability offers a dynamic lens to analyze spheres of tension and cooperation in shouldering the truly global threats in connection to the climate crisis.

In order to learn more about the interaction of foreign policy and the climate, we are honored to have with us Dr. Sabrina Schulz.

Dr. Sabrina Schulz is the Executive Director of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Germany. Before that, she served as Head of the Berlin office at KfW, Germany’s national promotional and international development bank where she represented the interests of KfW Group in the political arena. Previously, from 2012 to 2018, she was the Director of the Berlin office at E3G-Third Generation Environmentalism, an international non-profit climate and energy think tank. Before that, Dr. Schulz worked in various policy capacities for think tanks and consultancies in Germany, the UK, the US and Canada. From 2009 to 2011, she was a Policy Advisor on climate and energy to the British High Commission in Canada and led a project on climate security.

At Das Progressive Zentrum, a Berlin-based think tank, Dr. Schulz volunteers as a Policy Fellow in the program ›Economic and Social Transformation‹ and works on climate, sustainability, and European issues. She holds an MA in Public Policy and Management from the University of Potsdam, for which she also studied at the University of Konstanz and the Université catholique de Louvain, as well as an MA in International Politics and a PhD from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth in the United Kingdom.

The lecture series on the Future of Transatlantic Relations is part of our annual Ohio-Leipzig Transatlantic Student Summit.

Notions of Global and Transatlantic Security for the 2020s

Lecture Series on the Future of the Transatlantic Relationship

Second Event: Notions of Global and Transatlantic Security for the 2020s

Prof. Nukhet Sandal is Associate Professor and Chair of Political Science at Ohio University.

Prof. Nukhet Sandal is Associate Professor and Chair of Political Science at Ohio University.

Our second public lecture at the Transatlantic Student Summit 2021 addresses notions of security transforming amidst the continuing turbulence in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the political upheaval in previous years, there is a growing understanding that basic concepts of security and diplomacy are in fundamental transition. How Europe understands the United States, and how the U.S./ Europe understand themselves, is intricately connected to the tectonic shifts taking place in the norms, institutions, and interests. These shifts are shaping the debate about how to define and pursue or construct security and diplomacy in the coming decade.

For example, the debate in recent years pits the liberal world order built up after World War II against more authoritarian leaning political cultures from China to Russia, and a wave of populist politics from the Philippines to Poland, from America to Great Britain. At the same time, certain regions and populations within our societies mark a for many unexpected return of political geography, as support for movements that promote tighter migration or border policies flourishes in constituencies that express resentment from feeling left-behind by structural changes of recent decades. Accordingly, the discussion involves the very building blocks for any new model of security for international cooperation: what values should receive priority, what sort of institutions should be promoted, what are the interests of participants that should be pursued.

Our lecture will take a look at the intricate example of NATO and Turkey in recent years. It will provide the material to elaborate on the changing nature of alliances, the influence of religion, differing approaches to diplomacy and immigration, and populism, too. We could not be happier to have such a distinguished expert for that matter—Professor Nukhet Sandal.

Professor Sandal holds the Chair of Political Science at Ohio University. She earned her PhD in Politics and International Relations from University of Southern California in 2010, and she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Watson Institute of International Studies at Brown University from 2010-13. Her research and teaching interests include human security, religion and global politics, conflict management and politics of divided societies. Currently, Dr. Sandal serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies.

The lecture series on the Future of Transatlantic Relations is part of our annual Ohio-Leipzig Transatlantic Student Summit.

The China Shock, the Climate Shock, and the Transatlantic Relationship in the 2020s

Lecture Series on the Future of the Transatlantic Relationship

First Event: The Global Economy of the Transatlantic Relationship

Prof. Philipp Richter, Technical University Dresden

Prof. Philipp Richter, Technical University Dresden

Our first public lecture focuses on the economy of the transatlantic relationship.

Economic relations have been put under strain in recent years. Both rhetorically as well as physically, there was more disintegration than integration. So, where do we stand one year into the new decade—a decade that began with a shock of truly historical dimension—a global pandemic?

We could not be more delighted to have such a well-versed expert for this matter, Prof. Philipp Richter from Technical University Dresden, Germany. He will elaborate on economic shocks and their implications for the economies in the transatlantic sphere.

The lecture series on the Future of Transatlantic Relations is part of our annual Ohio-Leipzig Transatlantic Student Summit.

Philipp Richter holds the Chair of International Economics at Technical University Dresden. He is an expert for International Economic Policy and specializes in Trade and the Environment, Climate Policy, Distributional Questions, and International Energy Markets. He is a research fellow at the Kiel Centre for Globalization, at the German Institute for Economic Research Berlin (DIW), and a research affiliate at the Center for Economic Studies Munich (CES ifo). Philipp published extensively on strategic environmental policy, firm behaviour, and market structures. He holds a PhD in Economics from TU Berlin, and a Diploma in International Economics from the University of Tuebingen.
