School Visit at Gerda Taro Schule
On 8 November, Josette Marsh and Thaddeus Stringer went to a school as part of the “Ask an American” project and talked to a class of around 30 students. Josette gave a short presentation about American political structure, with an emphasis on the midterm elections. This included information about how the United States Congress operates and why it is important to American citizens. Students were also invited to participate in an activity where they created their own political parties by picking two or three issues to use as a platform.
After the presentation, the students were invited to ask questions of both Josette and Thaddeus about life in America, American political involvement, and American culture. Some questions included: how can someone become a U.S. citizen, how is life different in Germany versus America, and how difficult is it to learn German language. There were also a number of questions about popular culture such as what's your favorite sports team or how often do you eat fast food. The students were really engaged and asked a lot of questions on a variety of topics.
