Transatlantic Exchange in Challenging Times

Am 6. Mai kamen rund 45 Gäste im historischen Alten Senatssaal der Universität Leipzig zur Auftaktveranstaltung unseres Transatlantic Ambassador-Programms zusammen. Unter dem Titel „Transatlantic Exchange in Challenging Times“ brachte das DAIS Alumni von Austauschprogrammen, Stipendiaten, Studierende, Koordinatoren, Expats sowie Freundinnen und Freunde der transatlantischen Beziehungen zusammen und bot Raum für einen inspirierenden Austausch von Ideen, Perspektiven und Erfahrungen.
Eröffnet wurde die Veranstaltung durch ein Grußwort der Rektorin der Universität Leipzig und Schirmherrin unseres Transatlantic Ambassador-Programmes, Prof. Dr. Eva Inés Obergfell. Sie betonte die Bedeutung internationalen Dialogs und akademischer Zusammenarbeit in einer Zeit, die von geopolitischer Unsicherheit und wachsender gesellschaftlicher Polarisierung geprägt ist. In ihren Ausführungen hob sie den bleibenden Wert von Universitäten und zivilgesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen als Orte demokratischen Austauschs und globaler Vernetzung hervor.
Im Anschluss sprach Prof. Dr. Katja Kanzler, Vorsitzende des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Instituts Sachsen und Professorin für Amerikanistik an der Universität Leipzig. Sie ging auf die sich wandelnden transatlantischen Beziehungen ein und unterstrich, warum persönliche Begegnungen und regionale Netzwerke heute wichtiger sind denn je, insbesondere in Ostdeutschland. Anknüpfend an die Mission des DAIS machte sie deutlich, dass transatlantische Beziehungen nicht allein durch Diplomatie auf höchster Ebene entstehen, sondern vor allem auch durch kulturellen Austausch, Bildung und direkte menschliche Begegnungen getragen werden.
Die Veranstaltung markierte zugleich den offiziellen Auftakt des neuen Programms „Transatlantic Ambassadors“, das den transatlantischen Dialog und zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement durch lokale Netzwerke und persönlichen Austausch stärken soll. Die Initiative steht im Kontext des breiteren Engagements des DAIS für demokratische Kultur, interkulturelle Verständigung und die stärkere Einbindung regionaler Perspektiven in die transatlantischen Beziehungen.
Nach dem offiziellen Programm setzten die Gäste die Gespräche bei Getränken und informellem Networking fort. Die Atmosphäre war offen, engagiert und optimistisch. Viele Teilnehmende betonten, wie wichtig es gerade in politisch und gesellschaftlich herausfordernden Zeiten ist, transatlantische Verbindungen zu pflegen, zu erneuern und weiter auszubauen.
Die Veranstaltung machte deutlich, dass in Sachsen ein großes Interesse an transatlantischem Austausch besteht. Zugleich zeigte sie die wichtige Rolle von Einrichtungen wie dem Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institut Sachsen, die Räume für Dialog, Reflexion und internationale Zusammenarbeit schaffen.

On May 6, around 45 guests gathered in the historic Alter Senatssaal at Leipzig University for the launch event of our Transatlantic Ambassador Program. Under the title “Transatlantic Exchange in Challenging Times,” DAIS brought together alumni of exchange programs, grantees, students, coordinators, expats, and friends of the transatlantic relationship, creating space for an inspiring exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences.
The event opened with welcoming remarks by the Rector of Leipzig University and patron of our Transatlantic Ambassador Program, Prof. Dr. Eva Inés Obergfell. She emphasized the importance of international dialogue and academic cooperation in a time marked by geopolitical uncertainty and growing social polarization. In her remarks, she highlighted the enduring value of universities and civil society institutions as spaces for democratic exchange and global engagement.
This was followed by a speech from Prof. Dr. Katja Kanzler, Chair of the German-American Institute Saxony and Professor of American Studies at Leipzig University. She reflected on the changing nature of transatlantic relations and underscored why personal encounters and regional networks matter more than ever, especially in Eastern Germany. Drawing on the mission of DAIS, she emphasized that transatlantic relationships are not built through high-level diplomacy alone, but are also sustained through cultural exchange, education, and direct human connection.
The event also marked the official launch of the new “Transatlantic Ambassadors” program, which aims to strengthen transatlantic dialogue and civic engagement through local networks and personal exchange. The initiative is part of DAIS’s broader commitment to fostering democratic culture, intercultural understanding, and the stronger inclusion of regional perspectives in transatlantic relations.
Following the formal program, guests continued their conversations over drinks and informal networking. The atmosphere was open, engaged, and optimistic. Many participants emphasized how important it is, especially in politically and socially challenging times, to maintain, renew, and further strengthen transatlantic ties.
The event demonstrated the strong interest in transatlantic exchange in Saxony. At the same time, it highlighted the important role of institutions such as the German-American Institute Saxony in creating spaces for dialogue, reflection, and international cooperation.
