Celebrating a Decade of Transatlantic Dialogue: The 10th Anniversary of American Space Leipzig and the 4th Anniversary of DAI Sachsen

On February 7th 2024, we celebrated two anniversaries at the Bibliotheca Albertina Leipzig, illustrating the strong bonds and enduring partnership between Eastern Germany and the United States. The event was attended by around 110 guests.

Welcoming Remarks by Distinguished Guests

We were honored to welcome Chargé d’Affaires Woodward Clark Price, who emphasized the special relationship between Eastern Germany and the United States, and Prof. Eva Ines Obergfell, the Rector of Leipzig University. Their insights set a tone of mutual respect and cooperation that has characterized the American Space Leipzig's journey.

Chargé d’Affaires Clark Price’s remarks can be read here.

Another highlight of the event was a conversation moderated by Leipzig University Library Director Dr. Anne Lipp with Prof. Ulrich Schneider, co-founder of American Space Leipzig and former university library director, DAI Sachsen's Executive Director Eric W. Fraunholz, chair of the DAI Sachsen Prof. Katja Kanzler, and Mayor Ulrich Hörning. Their exchange reflected on the past, present, and future of American Space Leipzig, emphasizing the role of cultural and educational initiatives in fostering dialogue.

A Joyous Celebration

After the speeches, DAIS invited everyone to a reception with drinks, finger food, and music, featuring a performance by a student-teacher Jazz duo from Rahn Education’s Musikalisch-Sportliches Gymnasium in Leipzig and a birthday cake.

Reflecting on Achievements

American Space Leipzig, established in December 2013 through the vision of the late Prof. Crister S. Garrett, as a collaboration between the Institute for American Studies, Leipzig University Library, and the U.S. Government. It aims to enhance transatlantic dialogue in Eastern Germany.

DAI Sachsen organizes and coordinates the American Space Leipzig since February 2020.

Looking Forward

As we reflect on the milestones of the American Space Leipzig and DAI Sachsen, we are proud how much we have achieved, promoting transatlantic dialogue and understanding in eastern Germany. The celebration of their anniversaries is not just a reflection of past achievements but a beacon of hope for future endeavors, continuing to build bridges between cultures and communities.

This event was funded by the Federal Foreign Office, the Saxon State Chancellery, and the U.S. Embassy in Berlin.
