The CBYX/DAIS Transatlantic Democracy Workshop will convene members of the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Young Professionals Program (CBYX) at the German-American Institute (DAIS) in Leipzig. Together, we want to discuss issues of high relevance for transatlantic democracies against the backdrop of eastern German experiences.
Eastern Germany has undergone rapid transformation in the last three decades. One of the most pivotal changes entailed opening up not only to a globalizing world, but also to transatlantic relations. Today, the region continues to be one of the most transformative in the transatlantic space, as people, places, and institutions face yet another fundamental transformation: addressing climate change through decarbonizing societies.
At the workshop, we will look at historical and possible future trajectories of cultural exchange programs between the US and eastern Germany. CBYXers will be encouraged to share their experiences of working in the East. Together, we want to reflect on and discuss how international and cultural exchange can benefit democracies in their quest to address mutual global challenges like climate change.
Participants will also become acquainted with DAIS’ Freiberg Regional Futures Forum (FFF) in June 2023. They can apply to be part of a fellowship group that develops theses from eastern Germany for “building a global green future together”—this year’s theme for the general German-American Futures Forum in DC later in 2023.
